What is a Scottish Personal Licence?

A personal licence is issued under the Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005 to people who obtain a Scottish Certificate for Personal Licence Holder (SCPLH) qualification. The licence allows holders to legally authorise the sale of alcohol in Scotland.

How do you get a Scottish personal licence?

Complete our Scottish personal licence course and pass the exam at the end of the course to gain your Scottish Certificate for Personal Licence Holder (SCPLH) qualification. You’ll then need to apply for your Scottish personal licence with your local Licensing Board.

How long does a personal licence last in Scotland?

A personal licence in Scotland lasts for 10 years. You must complete refresher training every 5 years and provide evidence of your refresher training to your Licensing Board.

Who needs a personal licence in Scotland?

You or a member of your staff must hold a personal licence if you sell alcohol from licensed premises in Scotland. 'Licensed premises' include any premises allowed to sell alcohol under a premises licence. To qualify for a licence you must be 18 years or older, have not been convicted of any relevant offences, have an accredited licensing qualification and not have had a personal licence revoked within the last 5 years.
